Kitchen Magic Usa Staff Review from Chicago, Illinois

rude phone convo. doesn't deal w/owners w/ rental properties..they put "the cheap stuff" in.

Says, "you know, you're looking to spend $7-15K. TERRIBLE customer service & VERY POOR interpersonal skills

Kitchen Magic Usa Reply:
Kitchen Magic has never serviced Chicago, IL, neither do we provide "ballpark" figures or price ranges over the phone without seeing the kitchen. With this in mind, we are assuming that this review is regarding a Kitchen Magic that is in no way affiliated with us.

Sales Rep Lied Re: 14 Days To Cancel

As others describe, K. M.

rep required H & W present. After presentation, he filled out contract, pointed to a 14-day clause and lied by assuring us we had 14 days to cancel the contract. He handed me a pen and pointed to where I was to sign. When I tried reading the clause myself, he interrupted, restated I had 14 days to cancel, and again pointed to the signature line.

After 2 more readings, I stood my ground, stating the OFFER would remain open for 14 days, but if I signed, I had but 3 days to cancel. He argued, telling me I didn't understand the contract.

I stood my ground and he left. He was lying to us.

Kitchen Magic Usa Reply:
While we understand that there was some confusion, lack of clarity or giving misleading information is the opposite of our intent.
This may help clarify: One of our warehouse club partners requires that we guarantee the price of the project for 14 days and that we share this information with all of our customers at the time of signing. In addition, we give all customers 14 days to change their minds on colors and styles in the event they were undecided about the design elements, yet desire to move forward with their project started right away.

I worked for this sleazy company at one time, in a mall kiosk where you get people to give their personal information to "win" a free kitchen. No free kitchen did these people get, but non stop phone harassment.

Their organization is cult-like, they are pathetic. Avoid.

DO NOT USE KITCHEN CABINET

My husband reached out to Kitchen Magic and made an appointment with this company during his work hours. When the representative arrived, he quickly asked for my husband and when I told him that I was going to be making the decisions, he quickly dismissed me and told me he will come back when my husband was at home.

When he returned the next day, my husband explained we wanted to resurface our 20 year old kitchen cabinets. When he told us it would cost us $13,500, we were speechless. Understand resurfacing kitchen cabinets simply means they were glueing a vinyl covering to make it look new. For $13,500, we would have rather purchased a whole new kitchen.

My husband explained we were on a budget (we just got married, bought a new home and were re-modeling the whole house) and that if we went to IKEA we would be able to purchase a new kitchen for $2,000-$3,000. The representative responded "I'm pretty sure you have a coupon laying around that you can use for IKEA". I told him he could leave now and he didn't. He tried to engage my husband into some heated argument but my husband wouldn't take the bait.

We both told him: "thank you. You can leave now". We ended up buying a whole new kitchen with a granite countertop for $6,000 through a local business.

Please do yourself a favor and contact your local kitchen cabinet maker. I am pretty sure you will save your time, energy and a ton of money by going with your local business.

Kitchen Magic Usa Reply:
We apologize that your experience with one of our representatives was ‘less than magical.' We are very interested in knowing which representative visited you so that we can look into the matter.
Many of our customers share with us how much they enjoy and learn from their in-home consultation, and that is our aim, even if we do not earn your business.
It is always in the best interest of our customers that all homeowners be present at the time of our visit. This helps to ensure that everyone is on the same page from the very start and all parties are have all of their questions answered.
We never claim to be the cheapest, however we know we offer the best value; and a Lifetime of Home Ownership Warranty backs our work.
Refacing saves up to half the cost of quality custom cabinetry. New cabinets made overseas using materials such as pressed wood or particle board may have attractive price tags, but do not stand the test of time and often have formaldehyde and other toxins in their composition.
Our cabinet refacing is custom fit to each customers needs and by design is a permanent solution for those who need to update their cabinetry. We have completed over 50,000 kitchens since 1979 and have received thousands of testimonials from satisfied customers that are available to review at our website and elsewhere throughout the internet.

I had the same exact experience about them insisting that my husband be there. eventually

they made the appointment without him having to be there.

very nice salesperson. no problem

with that. I have not hired them as yet. still getting 2 more estimates.

I also let them know

that this is not 1940 and women are the main decision makers when it comes to kitchens for

the most part. the salesman said he understood but that is how they do things even though the

company is owned and run by women.

I found that a very big turnoff and will look past it after I get 2 other estimates. no other company even suggested such a thing.

Guest

I had a similar experience as well, they wouldn't even set an appointment with me without my husband. I very clearly told them that I would be paying for and making the decisions for the kitchen.

Needless to say, they lost a customer and have gained many poor referrals. Bad business decision!

Guest

I had similar experience with KM and the salesperson would NOT deal with me without my husband. I have a masters degree and have worked in the corporate world for 20+ years but that wasn't good enough... WILL NEVER DEAL WITH THIS COMPANY who is obviously not to be trusted per all of the reviews I have spent hours reading!

It is always in the best interest of our customers that all homeowners be present at the time of our visit. This helps to ensure that everyone is on the same page from the very start and all interested parties have all of their questions answered.

Our request was no reflection on our perception of your competence or intelligence, and no doubt that you are a very bright individual. Had it been the other way around and your husband did not want to have you there we would have requested your presence as well.

Throughout our 35 years of remodeling kitchens we have found that the process goes more harmoniously when all homeowners are engaged with the process from the very beginning. And as someone mentioned earlier, the company is owned by women so we do NOT doubt the ability of women to make excellent decisions :-).

made a appointment with a Representative through my Costco to have a Representative come down to talk about updating my kitchen with a a granite counter top. They called me back asking if my husband was going to be there I said no, why they said they needed both there, I said why I am not buying a house this work is going to cost about 2,000 dollars I have my own Costco card and I make the decision why does he have to be present this is not the 1900 Century they said he had to be there so I said forget it don't bother to come...ridiculous...

"Husband has to be home"??

Kitchen magic advised that they will not come to the estimate at my home because my husband had to be home. They then doubled back and said the homeowner had to be home when I advised that I am the homeowner and he is not.

They insisted he be home and we ended with no appt. for me this is complete discrimination. The manager then tried to tell me they want the people who make the decisions home. Which is when I told her that I do in fact make the decisions and have the bank account.

They seem to be stuck on outdated policies that in the end will narrow the gap for their competition. None of whom required that the "mister" be present.

Kitchen Magic Usa Reply:
We sincerely regret offending you in any way. Our request to meet with all homeowners is not based on ‘outdated policies’ as it is not a reflection on our perception of women’s competence, intelligence, or ability to make sound decisions. After all, Kitchen Magic is owned by women.
If your husband wanted to have the estimate by himself and did not want you to be there we would have requested your presence as well.
Throughout our 35 years of remodeling kitchens we have found that the process goes most harmoniously when all homeowners are engaged with the remodeling plans from the very beginning. Since a kitchen remodel is a large undertaking and affects everyone’s life in the home, in the end many of our customers have thanked us for encouraging their involvement.

Obviously you know nothing about kitchen magic or marketing and sales and you've never advertised. So, you wouldn't know the most effective way to find prospects to sell your products and services to. Just keep complaining someone may listen.

Guest

consider yourself LUCKY. If they'd have gotten your money, you'd be out of luck.

What REPUTABLE contractor uses mall kiosk spammers to get jobs?

THINK ABOUT THAT FOR A MINUTE. If they were any good, why would they use such a *** gimmick as a "contest" in order to get your phone#?

Guest

I have had the same experience. I was also advised that my husband had to be at home when the sales person came to quote.

Well actually she said that both homeowners should be at home. I said that I always made the decisions and have the bank account but this did not make any difference. I just said OK then and hung up the phone.

It's their loss! I have heard since that they want both of you at home because they try to give you the hard sell and get a deposit out of you then and there.

Guest

The Lifetime warranty is deceiving. They will charge you arm and leg for the service call and say that only material is covered. In the nutshell, once they have your money you are no longer relevant.

Incompetance, Substandard Work, High Prices

I am a Master Cabinetmaker for over 40 years. I have seen their work first hand on several occasions.

The work is poor, the materials are junk, and the homeowner doesn't know any better until it is too late. I have had to fix their mistakes, and correct things that were not done correctly in the first place. These people are nowhere close to being experts in cabinet work. Their "refacing" is done with cheap vinyl laminate, thermofoil doors, and the cheapest component hardware available.

Do yourselves a favor and stick with true professionals rather than the franchise names, big box stores and department stores offering home improvements. The smaller independant contractors in most instances will give you a better result, and save you aggrivation & money.

Lifetime Warranty!!!!! For the prices they charge & the profit they make, they could afford to replace the entire job and still come out ahead. I have visited homes where they were quoted 20 - 24K for a reface, when my quote was around 7 - 8K with real solid hardwood doors, custom finished, and using the best materials on the market.

Guest

Kitchen magic laminate kitchens aren't what they say already had to replace 3 times and not completed, now noticing bubbles on 4 more cabinets, cheap material and crown molding doesn't fit properly, uneven across the ceiling, misled by salesman and not informed properly as they work on commission. Left with a kitchen not completed. This statement is true wish I could post pictures!!!!!!!

Is it possible your ceiling is uneven?

Guest

If the above were true, why would we be one of the only companies offering a lifetime of ownership of your home warranty. We would truly be out of business many years ago if we had poor service and inferior products. We have been successful and growing since 1979 with most of our business coming from previous customers referrals.

Kitchen Magic does good work, but don't hold your breath for a call back

Recently wished to engage Kitchen Magic as they had previously done nice counter work for us. We kept getting re-directed to someone's voice mail, who promised to return call w/in 3 days.

In the interim we found a better alternative for our project. If there is a three-day call back wait, I am not sure I would be comfortable engaging this company.

I am wondering what would happen if there had been an actual problem on a contracted job. Would I have a 3-day phone recall wait while my kitchen may be in a shambles?

I see you commented that your call was not returned within 3 business days as per the message you received. Based upon the date you submitted this comment it appears our offices were under a skeleton crew since it was in December.

For the past several years our most of our staff has been laid off on an alternating basis for 3-4 weeks around the holidays due to it being a very slow time of year for us. Thus our time to respond to customers may have been slightly longer. During this time, they also prioritize those customers with urgent service needs vs.

a customer like yourself that may be just inquiring about additional work. I am sorry we weren't able to reply in a more timley manner.

Hustled...BIG time!

Kitchen Magic re-faced my kitchen cabinets and applied a laminate over the counter-tops 10 years ago. Immediately the laminate began lifting, Magic was called, they came and told me that the glue was defective. They replaced the lifting laminate, and per contract no charge parts/labor. Good. I have had the identical problem...lifting laminates section by section. Here's the hitch: now I pay $75 per call for labor, why? Because the contract (although for the life of my home ownership) will NOT extend to cover the labor. It's not a leap that encourages me to think that the adhesive was defective from the date of installation, this same adhesive continues problematic and results in lifting of the counter-tops. Why am I charged $75 per go around--and go around we do. Kitchen Magic: they are a crafty bunch over there, from the customer service rep and up into the management. Consumer/customer: BEWARE. I'm just a regular customer who wanted the job done right the first time. Now I'm paying yearly for their initial and admitted mistake.

Yes - Kitchen Magic’s "Lifetime of Home Ownership Warranty" does not include labor, which is really what they sell you in the first place - the laminate is not of much value in and of itself.

Guest

In delighted follow-up, and almost "not to be believed", I received a phone call from management that Kitchen Magic had reconsidered their position and were returning my check for $75 -- and they DID!

What?

Yes, they did and BRAVO!

Maybe the read the complaints and stepped in. Hope so.

Resolved: Kitchen Magic = Lowe's/Home Depot!

My parents are using them...

1st they do not disclose that they contract the work out! My parents had no idea that someone else was coming, not someone from kitchen m...in the end the first guy was nice, but he was ALONE! This was not a job for one man, but it is up to the contractor to add people because it is taken from their pay so to speak. In the end, work stopped for a day, which is unacceptable, and there have been so many "unforeseen" issues because they didn't really look at the kitchen before they quoted and signed. For one, to not tell the client that they need to empty the refrigerator prior is absurd. It is a working family kitchen, if they actually knew what was to be done, they would have asked them to empty it prior. There have been so many, oh gee, hmm, this is a tough one, wow, difficult; blah blah blah. Again, if they truly looked at the cabinets and moved some things to really know what the job entailed, my parents would not have had so much grief. I feel so bad for my parents. They are spending over $16,000.

FYI Home Depot and Lowes have the same business in terms of contracting out. Yes you have to use their products, but Kitchen Magic uses laminates...my parents could have gotten the same or a new kitchen. Lowes and Home Depot check on the contractor and make sure you know it too. You don't have to chase the company and/or work people like KM.

I would NEVER recommend to any one. In the end, the grief isn't worth it. I have been scammed by contractors before, so I will no longer tolerate nonsense. They technically aren't scamming but they sure aren't open and honest about their business and how it works. My parents were too trusting.

I don't think this person knows what he's talking about! Everybody sells wood and laminates there is a difference in price.

And if that where his parents wanted to save money it was there choice. As far as subcontractors go, every large company uses contract labor help to do work. They normally work under an Independent Contractor agreement. This is done because of the cost of workers Compensation and Unemployment Ins.

It has nothing to do with being deceitful.

As far as work stopping for a day who knows why?

It's possible that the lamination process required drying time. One Day is ridiculous to complain about.

Totally agree with the deceptive way that Kitchen Magic does business. They did a bait n switch to get into my home saying they refinish cabinets onsite after I explained I did not want refacing.

Further, their rep told me it would cost twice as much to go with new cabinets instead of refacing the old ones; yet, I found out I could go with solid wood cabinets, NEW, for the same price as KM quoted for refacing the old.

They price gouge and use deceptive sales pitches. Do your homework before working with these people.

Kitchen Magic - All talk, no listening, too much $$$

Updated by user Aug 18, 2015

I'm so glad I decided to use a local company instead of Kitchen Magic for my kitchen update. They listened to me, used high quality products, and met my budget.

Original review Mar 30, 2012

I'm looking at options for renovating my kitchen. Several things happened before getting to the contract signing point - thankfully.

1. I made an appointment three weeks in advance. The appointment was confirmed 3 days before the scheduled date. They called the day before and wanted to reschedule to later that day. What's the point in scheduling so far in advance if they can't make the appointment?

2. I was interested in cabinet refacing and new counter tops. The KM representative showed up and proceeded to show me a sample of what he just installed in his kitchen. I told him straight out that his choice what not to my taste. I like very contemporary furnishings. He continued to steer me towards very traditional.

3. the KM rep decided that I didn't need cabinet refacing but should replace the counters. He proceeded to show me samples of the material that I was interested in. He had something derogatory to say about every sample that I liked. At that point he could be giving it away and I wouldn't do business with him.

4. He gave me an estimate for replacing the counters. I've had two other estimates from reputable companies. The KM price is nearly 3 times the local vendors - for the same identical material. BTW - he claimed that only KM sold that brand.

Advice? Look for a local vendor. They will have the quality products for much less, and they are more likely to listen to you.

Kitchen Magic Usa Reply:
1. We strive to honor every appointment and spend as much time with the homeowner as they need. Sometimes one homeowner may desire more of our consultant's time than we had initially anticipated, and this may cause them to be unable to get to their next appointment in a timely manner. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience, while we do promise everyone this same level of uninterrupted service at the time of their consultations.

2. Our consultants are trained to give the best advice according to each homeowner's personal preferences. Since this particular review was made anonymously, we were unable to explore the matter further to determine the veracity of the concern or the consultant this could be referencing.

3. The representative's behavior as described is not congruent with the expected behavior of a Kitchen Magic consultant.

4. We carry many brands that are not available at home centers, and products on the market are typically priced according to quality. Our prices are competitive when compared to products of similar quality, and we provide an exceptional value overall.

Please reach out to us at (800) 237-0799 if we could be of further assistance.

Kitchen Magic tells you one thing and "Magic" they take your deposit and change the Deal !

"Beware" Kitchen Magic will offer to re-face your cabinets or provide you with custom cabinets.

I didn't want glued on or faced cabinets because that what was currently in my kitchen and looked like ***.

So I selected the custom cabinets and gave a required deposit.

Like "Magic" they started to demo my kitchen and came in with new BARE WOOD CABINETS and material that looked like formica. They were going to glue it on to the cabinets in my kitchen and use a rooter to trim it."ARE YOU KIDDING"

I explained clearly on my contract i did not want faced cabinets. This company left me with a mess ! Back and forth with management with no results.

Poorly run company,Sales Reps are liars and will take your money and not refund it because they use that "custom" word. Not real wood, not custom, their products are junk and so is the Company.

Pissed at Kitchen Magic- No refunds

Hi

I had Kitchen Magic out to my home for an estimate on resurfacing my kitchen cabinets. I picked out a design and was given a price.

I placed a down payment of $1,800.00 and less than one week later decided not to go through with the job.

The company refused to refund any money stating" you need to ask for a refund in 3 days" They had not even scheduled the date for the work, and obviously hadn't ordered the material yet, but they refused to refund anything. STAY AWAY from this company- I am a single Mom and I feel they took advantage of me.

I hate to see you let this go. Pursue it.

Only when enough people complain can a business be shut down (only to reappear again under another name). There's a chance enough complaints will result in the personal liability of the owner. Don't stop.

And don't be cowed by a pompous remark blaming you for your mistake. The salesman likely told you you had 14 days to think it over, as appears may be a common practice.

Nevertheless, don't sign any contract you don't get to read and review alone or with professional help, especially car orders, home improvement contracts and financing. No contract is ever written to protect you.

Guest

All contracts have a 3 business day rescission rule, by law. You don't have a week to change your mind.

You should not blame them for your mistake. Read before you sign, ignorance is no excuse.

Guest

I worked for KM at one time, as a mall rep. We were supposed to get people to stop by giving balloons to their kids.

Then we were supposed to talk them into entering a "contest" to win a "free kitchen". As they were filling out a slip to win a "FREE kitchen", We were expected to somehow talk these mall people into letting KM come over and give them an estimate.

(What happened to "FREE"?) One of the dumbest marketing ideas ever.

Guest

Let me start by saying I don't claim to be anonymous-I've worked for Kitchen Magic for 20 yrs and am NOT part of the family that owns and operates & all work really hard here at this office EVERYDAY all day including Sunday.

The comments I see aggravate me as I know that everyone here give 110% to give the customer the best possible job.

Our motto is the customer is always right.

It is true that our prices are NOT the cheapest as we have a large trained staff of experienced employees. We offer only the best products that allow us to offer the lifetime warranty. We may not return deposits when customer want to cancel after their legal recision period of 3 days, but who does --how would any company stay in business if they did.

I wouldn't work here for this long if I felt we did anything unscrupulous. This is truly the best company anyone could choose to do their work if they would just give us the chance to prove ourselves to them.

What your Company doesnt understand is every pissed off customer is telling at least 10 people at the Mals , Home Shows etc, to keep away.Your Company never even ordered the material and still didnt give back deposits even after your sales people out right lied to customers.

Kitchen Magic Usa - Warranty does not cover product if it gets wet (kitchen)
I had Kitchen Magic come out to do a face lift to my kitchen. Part of the job was to remove the "blank" face plates in front of the sink and install two tilt out doors to put sponges and stuff in for storage. Both of these doors have since started swelling at the bottom to the point where the seems are starting to pop and come apart. I called customer service and was told that this was water damage and not covered by the warranty. However, I could buy new fronts and they could give me a quote for this. When I said I did not think I should spend anymore money as I already paid a premium price for what I thought was a premium product and apparently this would just happen again, I was told that all they could do was to send me one of the doors and if I would not buy the other then they would not install it and I was on my own. Not sure what these doors are made of, but to build them out of something that will swell when they come in contact with water and place them in front of a kitchen sink where they could get water on them not to mention they are designed to hold sponges which very possibly could be at least damp is unacceptable. These doors are not anyplace where the water could freeze to cause this separation, they apparently just absorbed water and swelled like cheap particle board doors, which by no means these are. Up until this point, I was extremely satisfied, but would not recommend this product for a kitchen unless you are planning to sell the house, and even then, probably just before closing.
